Jacobs Forfeits IBF Title Shot By Missing Same-Day Weigh-in
Saturday morning WBA Regular Middleweight Champion Daniel Jacobs declined to participate in a same-day weigh-in, and effectively ended his opportunity to challenge for Golvokin’s IBF middleweight title.
According to IBF rules, fighters must weigh-in the day of the bout and not exceed the weight class limit by more than 10 pounds to be eligible to compete for the title. As a result Golovkin, who weighed in at 169.6 pounds, will retain the IBF title and Jacobs spares himself the expense of paying the IBF sanctioning fee.
IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker formally clarified the ruling with ESPN.com:
“Golovkin is defending his IBF title, however, Jacobs cannot acquire the title with a victory because he did not participate in the required IBF same-day weigh-in,” IBF championships chairman Lindsey Tucker said.
At the bout’s official weigh-in on Friday, Golovkin weighed in at 159.6 pounds while Jacobs was 159.8 pounds.
Golovkin vs. Jacobs telecast begins at 9PM ET on HBO PPV.
